Photos: Tesla charges up electric sports car
The Tesla Roadster, the all-electric sports car, has been rumoured for nearly two years. On Friday, the first commercial version of the car came out of its shipping crate. The street-legal car was bought by Tesla chairman Elon Musk, who showed it off to employees and reporters at the company headquarters in San Carlos, California.
The car is black, but the first hundred that go to buyers will come in a limited-edition dark green. The roadster, which can go more than 320 kilometres on a charge, costs $98,000 (£49,000).
Because of problems it had with the car's transmission, Tesla will only produce a limited number of cars at first. It will then expand production.
