Photos: Low-cost tech aids basic needs
Providing people easier ways of earning a living can have a long-lasting impact. The WorldBike, a variation on the load-bearing Xtracycle, enables a cyclist to haul 200 pounds of goods. Several hundred models, designed to be narrow enough for use on crowded roads, have been made so far. Using the Big Boda bicycle like the one pictured, a bread deliverer can carry loads about 30 per cent larger than with most other bicycles. WorldBike is about to produce 500 bicycles in a factory in Eastern Europe and will start selling them for around $100 (£50) in Kenya and Uganda.
The bicycles joined an exhibition of green technology at Burning Man earlier this month. WorldBike is beginning a design consulting gig with the United Nations in Nairobi.
